Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian, who was allegedly armed with a knife, in the occupied West Bank in yet another act of violence against Palestinian citizens. The victim was reportedly heading from the West Bank city of Jenin to Israel on Saturday morning, when he was spotted at a checkpoint, shot and killed by Israeli troops.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society received the body of the Palestinian, whose identity has not been released yet.
An unidentified Israeli army spokesperson claimed that “the Palestinian attempted to stab security personnel at the crossing.”
Eyewitnesses, however, told the Palestinian Ma’an news agency that “there were no stabbing attempts” when Israeli forces opened fire on the Palestinian youth.Read More »
UNESCO has censured Israel for limiting Muslim access to Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which has recently become the flashpoint for bloodshed and violence amid mounting tensions over the holy site, sacred to both Muslims and Jews. The resolution, passed Wednesday, “deeply deplores the recent repression in East Jerusalem, and the failure of Israel, the Occupying Power, to cease the persistent excavations and works in East Jerusalem particularly in and around the Old City." According to Ynet, a news website in Israel, it also "strongly condemns Israeli aggression and illegal measures restricting freedom of worship and access to the holy Muslim site of the Al-Aqsa mosque."
According to diplomats, the UNESCO resolution also reaffirmed that two other holy sites in the West Bank, the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron and Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem, “are an integral part of Palestine.” It was passed with 26 votes for and six against – the US, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Estonia. There were 25 abstentions, including France, diplomats said.
The draft resolution was modified at the last minute to drop a controversial clause that laid claim to Jerusalem’s Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall) as a space reserved exclusively for Muslims. According to Israeli diplomats, that clause (proposed by several Muslim states) would have declared the wall an "integral part" of the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, a potential first step to forbidding Jews from approaching the holy site where they pray and slip written prayers into the wall’s cracks.Read More »
An elderly Palestinian man was filmed amid clashes between Israeli army and Palestinian youths in Hebron on 10 October, standing in front of the raised guns of the Israeli troops and confronting them before falling backwards to the ground.
The video footage was filmed by Bilal al Taweel, a Palestinian man who was at the scene, and obtained by Reuters. The elderly Palestinian, 65 years-old Ziyad Abu Haleel, is heard in the video telling the soldiers "you should be ashamed".
"I will not move. You should be ashamed of yourself. How do you fire your weapon on kids? That's not ok. Take your soldiers away from here. Do not fire your weapons. If they die you will die. Be careful, do not fire your weapons on kids. You should be ashamed of yourself. Do not raise your hand on me. You should be ashamed. You should be ashamed. Do not shoot. No, I will not move. I will not move. No, you cannot arrest me. I will not move back. Take them, imprison them but don't shoot them. You want to kill more? Two martyrs were buried today and you want to kill more? Are you not ashamed? Are you not a human being? A dog? A pig? Go to Ethiopia to kill. Do not shoot," Abu Haleel yelled at the soldiers.Read More »
